Inspiration for two different pieces was derived off this picture of a formal ruched ballgown. One was a client commissioned piece to wear to prom, the other was our blue and silver fairy. This assymetrical dress featured a basket weave type of ruching around the hips and traveled up into the bodice into the shoulder. The skirt falls normally and puddles at the floor. The dress has a zipper back and another strap which forms diagnally across the back. The dress was also modified to accomodate the customer's budget and thus took inspiration and characteristics of the original dress.
Our creation shown on the right features the same patterning of ruching throughout the bodice. The dress is flatted with a blue satin underlay and a royal blue chiffon overlay as per the customer's choice. The skirt was also shortened so that the customer could walk properly without tripping over the puddles of the skirt shown in the original photo. This dress of course was made to the customer's measurements and incorporated elements of the original dress such as the diagnal back strap, heavily detailed ruched bodice, and such.
The bodice of this dress was the most time consuming of this piece. Because of the basket weave design strips of flatted chiffon and satin were created which were individually ruched. Then all the pieces were laid so that they interlocked, and then trimmed away to form the bodice.
